A food manufacturer producing mayonnaise in glass jars was reviewing its current tamper-evident packaging. The range covered two jar sizes, 600g and 400g, with a particular focus on cap sealing performance.
With output increasing, the existing packaging approach was no longer well suited to automated production. Maintaining hygiene and product safety during this transition became a key consideration.
Challenges & Requirements
The project involved limitations in the original manual packaging process, as well as challenges in selecting suitable materials for the transition to automation.
- Manual Handling and Contamination Risk
In manual packaging operations, direct contact during handling may introduce contamination risks. - Packaging Convenience and Product Safety
The customer required a sleeve design that is easy to remove while allowing consumers to clearly recognize that the product had not been opened before purchase. - Material Requirements for Automated Equipment
In manual packaging, pre-formed sleeves or inner heat-seal liners were used; however, after selecting automated equipment, shrink sleeve material supplied in roll form became necessary.
Packaging Material Planning
PVC Shrink Tubing for Tamper Evidence
After evaluating the production conditions and packaging goals, PVC shrink tubing was selected.
It offered reliable sealing around the bottle cap, clear tamper-evident protection, and enough shrink range to accommodate both jar sizes.
Easy-Tear Feature for Consumer Convenience
To avoid forcing consumers to struggle with the seal, an easy-tear perforation was added to the shrink sleeve roll. This small detail significantly improved usability after opening, without affecting security before purchase.
Visible Safety at the Point of Sale
Unlike inner safety liners hidden under the cap, shrink sleeves make product integrity visible. Shoppers can quickly confirm that the jar has not been opened, which helps build confidence at the shelf.
How Shrink Tubing Provides Tamper Evident Protection
Through optimized shrink tubing material selection, the packaging solution achieved:
- Secure and consistent sealing around the bottle cap
- Clear, visible tamper evidence through full-sleeve coverage
- Easy opening for consumers through integrated tear features
- Improved shelf appearance with a clean and uniform finish
This case shows how proper shrink tubing material selection can enhance product security, usability, and overall presentation without adding packaging complexity.
